In honor and recognition of John Coleman’s leadership and vision.

For the past 10 years I’ve had the privilege of working closely with John Coleman, President/CEO of ILWU Credit Union. It’s been an incredible experience and now that he has retired after 14 years I’m often asked about his legacy.

Mr. Coleman led the Credit Union through unprecedented growth – from $23 million in assets in 1999 to now nearly $140 million.  We can attribute this growth to his vision and the guiding principal that he instilled in all of us – “members first.”  Our members’ needs and wants are what matter most. This pursuit is what will continue to guide this credit union, whether it’s in the branches or online.

Those of us who worked closely with him can say he made us into leaders. He challenged us to think outside the box and not just follow what others do.

Under his leadership we opened the ILWU Credit Union San Pedro Branch in February 2013. This new and modern facility was created to more conveniently serve the financial needs of the San Pedro ILWU community and their families.  In December, during our staff Holiday Party, we dedicated the branch in his honor. The plaque reads:

“To Honor and Recognize the Leadership and Vision of John Coleman, CEO 1999 to 2013. We Dedicate the ILWU Credit Union San Pedro Branch.”
