Longshoremen Weekend Guide: October 12-14, 2012

Enjoy an international film festival in your own backyard, attend a pirate festival with the kids or explore a large collection of fossils. This and more in this week’s Longshoremen Weekend Guide.

Friday, October 12
San Pedro International Film Festival
Starts Friday, October 12 at 7 PM
Ends Sunday, October 14 at 8 PM
Admission: Starts at $25. The San Pedro International Film Festival (SPIFF) will feature new films, documentaries, short films, and student works. Participate in discussion panels, Q&A sessions with the filmmakers, opening and closing night premieres and parties, and celebrity tribute programs. Location: Various venues. Alpine Village Presents Oktoberfest 2012
Festivities begin at 6 PM Fridays and Saturdays, 1 PM on Sundays
Admission: $5-$20. Only a few days are left to enjoy Oktoberfest at Alpine Village. The celebration ends on Saturday, October 27. Order your tickets online or purchase them at the gate. Saturday, October 13
Balboa Beach Music Fest
10 AM to 11 PM
Admission: $45-$200. Free parking is available at the Hoag Hospital parking structure located at 540 Superior Avenue. Complimentary shuttles will run between the parking lot and the festival grounds between 10 AM and 11 PM. Enjoy this  daylong music festival with performances by Matt Nathanson, Joshua Radin, A Fine Frenzy and more! The Cooper Center Presents: Prehistoric OC, a National Fossil Day and National Archaeology Day Event
11 AM to 3 PM
Admission: FREE. Parking is $5.oo; street parking is free. A family event with archaeological and paleontological demonstrations and exhibits, a free photo booth, fun crafts, activities and guided tours to showcase an extensive fossil collection. Experience an exploding volcano demo and actual props from the Jurassic Park movies. Location: Ralph B Clark Regional Park, 8800 Rosecrans Avenue in Buena Park, CA 90621. Shoreline Village Pirate Festival
1 PM to 7 PM

Sunday, October 14
Mary’s Promenade on the Peninsula 5K Run/Walk 2012
Late registration: 6:30 AM. Race begins at 8:30 AM
Registration: $35. Run through the Promenade on the Peninsula Mall and adjacent Rolling Hills Estates city streets. $1000 cash to top 3 male and female finishers. Location: 550 Deep Valley Drive in Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA 90274. Visit the event website for more details.

3rd Annual Taste of the Pier and Boardwalk
12 PM to 4 PM
Admission: FREE. Tasting tickets are $1.00 each. Spend your Sunday enjoying food tastings, bands, balloons, face painting, arts and crafts vendors and more.
